COLLINGWOOD defender Marley Williams has been traded to North Melbourne for a bargain-basement pick – No.105 – in November's NAB AFL Draft. 

Pick 105 was the selection that took Chris Grant to the Western Bulldogs in 1988.

The 23-year-old West Australian, who finished seventh in the Magpies' best and fairest last year, appears a steal for the rebuilding Kangaroos.

This is despite the fact Collingwood list manager Derek Hine revealed that the Pies would likely have delisted Williams if he hadn't been traded.

The Brisbane Lions had also shown interest in Williams, but a deal was sealed about 20 minutes before the 2pm trade deadline on Thursday.

The hard-at-it left-footer, a former rookie from North Albany, played 68 games for Collingwood since making his debut in 2012. 

He had appeared one of the Pies' brightest defensive prospects with his hardness and dash before suffering a dramatic fall this year.

"Marley is an exciting footballer and plays with real speed and flare," Kangaroos football manager Cameron Joyce said.

"We expect him to give us some great drive out of our back half and really look to take the game on as he's done throughout his time at Collingwood."

Joyce also admires the tough left-footer's ability to play on pacy small forwards.

"There's a great opportunity for him here at Arden Street and we’re excited to have him on board," Joyce said.

The former rookie from North Albany made his AFL debut in 2012 and had appeared one of the Pies' brightest defensive prospects with his hardness and dash before suffering a dramatic fall this year.

After sustaining a foot injury in round three that sidelined him for five games, Williams was later dropped twice as his form tapered.

He finished the season at AFL level but his kicking continued to let him down. 

In April 2014, Williams received a 12-month suspended sentence in a Perth court after being convicted of grievous bodily harm following a one-punch attack in 2012.
