Watch Majak Daw's goal NOW on YouTube

North Melbourne rookie Majak Daw hasn’t struggled for any attention so far this season, but now the spotlight is well and truly on him after kicking a contender for goal of the year for Werribee in the VFL on Saturday.

Daw (19 disposals, 33 hit-outs, and 5 tackles) burst out of defence and bounced the ball four times, brushing several defenders aside before kicking a booming goal from outside 50.

The goal aside, his overall game was one of his best yet since coming to the club in late 2009.

The ruckman’s heroics capped off a memorable day for the Tigers, who kicked eight goals in the final term to defeat Collingwood by a massive 90 points.

While the Magpies boasted several senior-listed players, a six goal opening term from Werribee blew them out of the water.

Ben McKinley (16 possessions) was the most effective forward for the North affiliate, despite some inaccuracy in front of goal.

“Ben was terrific. Aside from kicking five goals five behinds, he was extremely team-orientated and had a number of assists that created scoring opportunities for his team-mates,” Werribee coach Paul Satterley told kangaroos.com.au.

Fellow Kangaroo Ben Warren (20 possessions, 5 marks) also benefitted from terrific midfield delivery and a tireless work ethic.

Gutsy midfielder Matthew Scott (27 possessions, 3 clearances) is quickly adapting to senior VFL football after spending most of last year in the reserves, while Ben Ross (25 possessions, 10 inside 50’s) set up plenty of chances for his team and continues to show improvement coming back from a groin injury.

“This should give Matty (Scott) a lot of confidence as it was probably his best performance at this level. I’m very pleased for him as he has worked hard and was rewarded today.

“Benny was terrific playing higher game time since returning from injury. He played across half-forward and in the midfield, laying six strong tackles,” Satterley added.

Likewise in the middle, Ben Speight (20 possessions, 2 goals) was again impressive when the game was in the balance.

“Speighty had a quiet first half and then lifted. Most pleasing was one of his courageous efforts late in the game which I am sure the North coaches would have liked.”

In just his second senior game Kieran Harper (20 disposals, 5 tackles) showed glimpses of his exciting talent, with the Tigers’ coach pointing to his ball handling and outstanding vertical leap as assets that will hold him in good stead in his development.

Down back Jamie Macmillan (21 possessions) still had a busy day in a high-scoring affair but could hold his head high.

“Jamie is in very good form for us and his composure with traffic around him was excellent. He is defending first and then setting up a lot of our run out of defence.”

With two wins on the board, Werribee faces fellow Kangaroos’ affiliate North Ballarat next week in what looms as an ultra-important clash for both clubs.
