All the teams for Round 19 of the Smithy’s VFL.
Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions have had mixed news at the selection table for their blockbuster Smithy’s VFL QClash at Heritage Bank Stadium on Saturday.
The ladder-leading Suns have regained three players who have been left out of the AFL team in Ben Long, Jy Farrar and Hewago Oea, with VFL captain Sean Lemmens and livewire Mal Rosas promoted in their place.
The news isn’t great for the Lions, with their own captain, Wylie Buzza, being in concussion protocols and being replaced by Lockie Rayner for a game where the winner will be in the box seat to secure an all-important top two spot and the two home finals that come with it.
There is also a rivalry crackerjack showdown at Victoria Park, where Collingwood has recalled experienced defenders Neville Jetta and Campbell Lane to take on Carlton in a game the Magpies need to win to climb back into the top 10 and one the Blues need to keep their arch-rival at bay and stay in touch with the top six.
Star midfielder Fin Macrae will be sidelined however, being ruled out for up to a month with a broken thumb.
The Blues have made a series of big changes, with Lachie Cowan, Ed Curnow, Zac Fisher, Josh Honey and Lewis Young all dropped from the AFL team and Dandenong Stingrays youngster Hugo Nosiara to make his debut.
Marc Pittonet and Caleb Marchbank have been promoted, skipper Ben Crocker will miss with a hamstring injury and Corey Durdin is out with a shoulder problem.
Williamstown has copped a triple whammy for its trip to Casey Fields to face the Demons, with captain Cam Polson (quad), Harry Jones (knee) and Darby Henderson (foot) all injured, being replaced by ninth-gamer Dylan Thomas and debutants Zac Banch (Shepparton Swans) and Jake Smith (Western Jets).
The Demons have gone the other way, with James Harmes returning to the AFL and Zane Duursma and Kyah Farris-White to the Coates Talent League, while quartet Ben Brown, Joel Smith, Bailey Laurie and 98th gamer Matt Buntine are all in.
Casey also has a debutant, with Oakleigh Chargers young star Kynan Brown getting a chance after representing Vic Metro at the U18 National Championships.
Four-time Werribee best-and-fairest winner Matt Hanson will make his latest comeback in an injury-plagued season after he was selected to return from a shoulder injury in the huge clash with North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval.
Hanson has managed just two games this season and his inclusion to a team that has won 12 in a row is a major boost – as is the recall of ruckman Kobe Annand from concussion.
The Kangaroos have made a scarcely believable 10 changes, with Todd Goldstein, Kayne Turner, Will Phillips and AFL debutant Robert Hansen promoted, Aidan Bonar and Aaron Hall rested and captain Jack Watkins ruled out with a minor hamstring issue.
Cooper Harvey returns from the AFL and Tom Powell from injury, defender Hamish Murphy plays his first game for the year and Sam Lowson, Louis Butler and Nick Hodgson are also back.
Southport’s flickering finals hopes have received a double blow ahead of its trip to Frankston, with star ruck-forward Fraser Thurlow and wingman Jay Lockhart ruled out for the season with injury.
Thurlow hurt his quad in the Sharks’ shock loss to Richmond a fortnight ago and Lockhart has an arm injury, with their spots being taken by young ruckman Riley Bowman and utility Jay Foon.
The Dolphins have regained defender Taine Barlow and ruckman Nic Minchin, with luckless big man Tom Roberts ruled out for the year with his foot injury flaring up again after just two games back.
Sydney has bolstered its team to take on Essendon at Windy Hill on Sunday, with recruit Aaron Francis, star midfielders Corey Warner and Nick Shipley, first-round draft pick Jacob Konstanty and Academy prospects Caiden Cleary and Max Rider all recalled as the Swans shoot for a third win of the year.
The Bombers will welcome back dangerous swingman James Stewart from a foot injury, with Calder Cannons midfielder Mahmoud Taha to make his debut.
Geelong has also beefed up its line-up for its home game against Northern Bullants, with Jed Bews (knee) and Jon Ceglar (ankle/adductor) named to return alongside Sam Menegola and omitted Irishmen Mark O’Connor and Oisin Mullin.
Young ruckman Toby Conway has succumbed to injury again after two games and improving runner Mace Cousins is out for the season with a leg problem.
The Bullants have made eight changes to the team that was held goalless by Footscray last week, only two of them forced, with Peter Gentile to miss a week with a quad and Ben Ham one or two with a glute, although the inclusions are solid, headed by Will Sexton, Saad El Hawli, Dylan Clarke, Ben Hurley, Dylan Laurie and Ryan Gardiner.
There are potentially mass changes for both Box Hill Hawks and Sandringham ahead of their game at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.
The Hawks regain Denver Grainger-Barrass from the AFL team and Max Ramsden from injury, while youngster Jake Arundell earns his first call-up of the season, with Fergus Greene, Ned Long and Jack Scrimshaw all on the AFL extended bench.
Brandon Ryan’s rise from Maribyrnong Park at the end of last season through Northern Bullants to Box Hill and now the AFL will be complete when he debuts against St Kilda, with James Blanck, Lachie Bramble, Cam Mackenzie and Lloyd Meek all recalled by Hawthorn.
Sandringham gets back Tim Membrey and Jack Hayes from injury and could add Tom Campbell, Jack Bytel and Liam Stocker pending AFL selection, with Ryan Byrnes going up.
Coburg has recalled its most experienced player as it attempts to break through for its first win of the season under the Friday night lights against Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium.
Ryan Exon, 29, has played 113 VFL matches but only seven this season and none since Round 11.
He forces his way back into the Lions’ team alongside last week’s late withdrawal Josh Kemp (corked calf) for a clash against a team they have a recent winning record against, with Charlie Beasley and Daniel Johnston left out.
Coburg has won the past two matches against the Borough, by two points last year and 36 points in 2021 and hasn’t lowered its colours to them since 2019, given the cancellation of the 2020 season.
The Lions have been playing some good football in recent weeks but haven’t been able to string four quarters together – something they will need to rectify to break the drought.
Port Melbourne has suffered a major injury blow with dual leading goal kicker Matt Signorello likely to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, while Jeremy O’Sullivan is out with concussion.
They have been replaced by Bryce Milford and the experienced Campbell Walker as the Borough tries to break a three-match slide – although those defeats were competitive losses to top four teams Box Hill Hawks and Werribee, plus eighth-placed Carlton.
All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.
