GET EXCITED, Essendon fans.
Stephanie Hird and Mason Fletcher – the respective offspring of Bombers champions James and Dustin – already attracted headlines this year, and now it's Alwyn jnr and Jayden Davey's turn.
The Darwin-based, 14-year-old identical twins of former 100-game Essendon speedster Alwyn 'Froggy' Davey have turned heads with their football talent in Sydney this week.
AFL.com.au understands multiple Melbourne and Adelaide private schools are jostling to secure the Davey boys' services for when they start their Year 10 studies in 2019.
Alwyn jnr, who kicks on his right foot, and Jayden, a left-footer like his father and uncle Aaron, are representing Northern Territory's Kickstart side at the Under-15 AFL National Male Diversity Championships.
They have both kicked breathtaking goals at the championships and impressed with their skills, pressure and work-rate, according to NT coach Aaron Motlop.
Alwyn jnr produced one effort against NSW where he swooped on a loose ball in the middle, burst forward with a bounce, kicked inside 50, followed up his own kick then slotted a goal.
Motlop, a cousin of AFL footballers Steven, Daniel and Shannon and whose grandfather was a sibling of Davey's grandmother, was suitably impressed.
"It was great to see that from a young boy, a bottom-age kid, and showed leadership and potential," Motlop told AFL.com.au.
"You're starting to see in their performances a lot of talent and courage … and they can come away (with this team) again next year, so it's a great experience for them.
"But they've been really valuable for our team with their ability to find the footy and make good choices with the ball."
Davey and his wife Janelle's 11-year-old son Alijah is another showing great promise, and they also have a five-year-old, Cruz, who is one to watch for the future.
"Alwyn jnr is probably better with his ball use, decision-making and cleanness," Davey told AFL.com.au.
"Jayden is clean as well – not as much as Alwyn – but he likes a sidestep and kicking goals. He takes the game on a bit and if he gets caught, he gets caught.
"There's still a long way to go, but we'll just see how it pans out in the future. I'm proud of the way they're going."
Davey, whose seven-season AFL career ended in 2013, has taken a hands-on approach to his children's development and they all play at the same NT club, Palmerston.
The twins combined to kick 22 goals and feature in the Magpies' best players 12 times in 14 games in the under-14s this past season.
Both boys are in Essendon's James Hird Academy, a development program that fosters father-son and father-daughter prospects and other young footballers from non-traditional AFL regions.
Davey's brother Aaron, who made 178 appearances for Melbourne, is AFL Cairns' football development manager and coaches Cairns City Lions, where they are both playing this season.
