GREATER Western Sydney will likely be forced to play its first home final at ANZ Stadium if it is drawn to host crosstown rivals the Sydney Swans.
The Giants, who have not played at the venue since 2013, are on track to earn a home final with a league-high percentage that has them sitting in second spot on the ladder, ahead of the third-placed Swans.
They have been guaranteed the right to play any finals they qualify to host at their Spotless Stadium home, as long as they are not drawn to face the Swans.
The AFL has said it would likely prioritise attendance if a historic clash between the rivals eventuates this September.
"We're locked in for a Sydney home final at ANZ Stadium as things stand (but) we're not locked into GWS home finals at that venue," AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said on 3AW.
"It would make some sense if you had a Sydney derby in a final that could be played at ANZ.
"(But) it would make sense for all other GWS finals to be played at Spotless Stadium ... that would make the most sense as we see it unfolding.
"It gives the maximum opportunity for people to attend the match and that is something we have to consider."
Geelong is also pushing to host a final this season, sitting fourth after 17 games.
But they are unlikely to be granted a home final at Simonds Stadium.
The Cats have only played one final at their Geelong base, against Fremantle in 2013, and a reduced capacity during renovations would make it difficult to allow them the same right this season.
"They won't have to travel out of their state, it depends on the match-up," Evans said.
"In a stadium that has reduced capacity we would still want to [prioritise] how many fans could attend the game."
