ALASTAIR Clarkson's revelation that he had met with Greater Western Sydney free agent Stephen Coniglio didn't blindside Leon Cameron, but the Giants coach admits the concept of his players talking to opposition clubs isn't one that sits well with him.

Hawthorn's four-time premiership coach told Fox Footy on Monday night that he'd caught up with Coniglio in recent weeks.

The Hawks and Carlton are reportedly the clubs in best position to land the Giant should he choose to leave at the end of the season.

Coniglio has been heavily linked to the Blues, who are reportedly prepared to offer the 25-year-old massive money to move south but playing alongside close friend Jaeger O'Meara and under Clarkson at Hawthorn is also a lucrative prospect.

Cameron, who served as Clarkson's assistant for three seasons before he joined GWS, told reporters on Wednesday that although he knows it goes on and he wished it didn't, there's not much clubs can do about free agent dealings.

"It's an interesting part of the game, (coaches) talking to opposition players at the backend of seasons," he said.

"I think we'd be pretty naïve to think that it doesn't happen.

"Whether we like that or whether we agree on that, that's for everyone to make their own opinion on.

"I know when that (news) becomes public knowledge there's always going to be a story on that, but it's probably going on at all 18 AFL clubs.

"It's a disappointing part of the AFL system because you're actually in-season, but equally there's pretty much no other way (to do it).

"You look at it and say, 'Do you want your players talking to someone else?'. Probably not but it's been going on for forever and a day."

Cameron didn't want to buy in to any talk about introducing anti-tampering rules in the AFL, similar to those used overseas.

In the NBA, teams are barred from even publicly expressing interest in a player who is currently under contract with another team.

"You guys (the media) can come up with a rule and maybe suggest that to the AFL," Cameron said with a laugh.

Cameron said Coniglio had spoken to him about the Clarkson rendezvous and his dealings with the GWS vice-captain have continued to be positive over the past few weeks.

"He's been absolutely outstanding," he said.

"(I said it) last week, the week before that and the week before that, I remain really confident that he's going to be at our footy club (going forward).

"Has he got a huge decision to make? He definitely has, he's a free agent.

"We're one of 18 clubs that have to deal with it.

"I'm really proud of the way the club has answered questions about it.

"We've answered in a very honest way about how Stephen was feeling every week and I don't see anything different (with him), he's been terrific.

"I'm confident it's going to go our way in the coming weeks."
