Currie was named as an emergency for North's clash with Port Adelaide in Hobart last Saturday, but remained in Melbourne and suffered significant ligament damage to his thumb in Werribee's clash with Geelong's VFL team last Sunday.
"Daniel has a grade three rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament of his left thumb," North medical services director Steve Saunders told NMFC.com.au on Monday night.
"We'll need to see how the surgery pans out and how he progresses from there, but it's looking like he'll be out for around six weeks."
Prior to joining North via pick No.56 in last year's national draft, Currie spent five years on the Sydney Swans' list without playing an AFL game.
After an impressive NAB Cup campaign, Currie lost a close-fought battle for North's No.1 ruck spot with Todd Goldstein, but has remained in selection contention since with his strong form for Werribee.
In better news for North, Saunders said Sam Wright and Aaron Black had both recovered well from heavy knocks in the Roos' win over Port and should be available for selection against the Western Bulldogs this Saturday.
"Sam got a kick to the outside of his knee in the second quarter. His training will be modified throughout the week but he should be fine," Saunders said.
"Aaron had a knock to the side of the hip but moved really well today. It was surprising how well he's pulled up; he's fine."
Saunders said key forward Tom Curran's foot surgery last Wednesday had gone "exceptionally well" and he would begin a rehabilitation program soon.
