1. Buddy breaks his duck
Two minutes and 23 seconds was all it took for the most talked about goal drought of 2013 to come to its close. Goalless for the past fortnight, Lance Franklin received a pass from Luke Breust, outmarked Ted Richards, played on and kicked a long bomb from outside 50 metres to the city end of the MCG. He bobbed up with a second just a few minutes later, a snap off one step and finished the night with three goals.
2. Tale of two forward lines
Hawthorn might finally have worked out its forward structure. The combination of Franklin, Jarryd Roughead, David Hale and Jack Gunston has struggled to click at the same time, but they were electrifying against the Swans and all hit the scoreboard. Roughead, who kicked four goals, is ranked No.29 in the Official AFL Rankings brought to you by our good friends at Vero and his aggression, mobility and finishing in the first half was exquisite. Franklin, Hale and Gunston all finished with three goals. The Swans were really exposed down back and missed the injured Lewis Roberts-Thomson.
3. Not a happy hunting ground
The Swans don't like the MCG during the home and away season. Saturday night's loss was their ninth regular season loss in 10 outings at the home of football, with the other being a draw. Of course, there is the small matter of last year's Grand Final win, which as any Swans loyalist will attest, makes up for the barren home and away scoreline many times over.
4. Review controversy
Mark Evans will know he has crossed sides once and for all this week when he likely gets a phone call from his former colleague, Alastair Clarkson. Evans was the former head of footy operations at the Hawks but now holds that title with the AFL and will hear from Clarkson after the strange overturn of a shot for goal by Hawk Jordan Lewis in the final term. It was paid a goal (and appeared so after viewing several replays) only to be overturned by the video review team after a lengthy discussion. "The benefit of the doubt should go to the batsman," Clarkson said afterwards. "My old buddy Mark Evans will be under a bit of heat and controversy for a few days."
5. Tall, dark stranger
We've had legends, children of legends, Olympians and other sporting heroes and competition winners, among others, tossing the coin before the match. But we broke new ground at the MCG on Saturday night when the Red Queen - a tall woman, her head completely shrouded by a red wig - tossed the coin. She was there to promote Dark MOFO, an art exhibition at Hobart's MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), which opens next month.
