Just days after a complaint was lodged over the treatment injured Tiger Chris Knights received from a member of the AAMI Stadium crowd, Goodes was also a target at the MCG during the Swans' 37-point loss to Hawthorn.
There was no suggestion of racial vilification and Goodes himself had no intention of taking the matter further, but the nature of the foul-mouthed, confrontational rant compelled club officials to alert the League.
Players are regularly subjected to taunts from the crowd in any given game, but it was felt this incident had crossed the line.
"We didn't make a complaint, we just let the AFL know," a Swans spokesman told AFL.com.au.
"There was some inappropriate abuse. It wasn't of a racial nature, but we just made the AFL aware of it.
"He (the fan) was right down on the fence and it can be a confronting environment.
"The players probably just shouldn't have to tolerate abuse in any way, shape or form."
Unfortunately there appears little the AFL can do in this case, as it has reviewed the game after receiving the notification from the Swans and has been unable to find any footage of the offending person.
"The Swans let us know today that the person had been swearing quite severely at Adam when he came off the field," an AFL spokesman said.
"We haven't got any video footage at all that shows the person.
"We weren't aware of it on the day of the game and we're not quite sure where else we can take it."
Port Adelaide is looking into the matter involving Knights, when a fan complained of another spectator's abuse of the Richmond player as he was being taken from the ground on a stretcher.
In another incident, two men were ejected from Etihad Stadium for racially abusing North Melbourne's Majak Daw during their victory over the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.
"The expectation at all times with supporters is you need to be respectful of the people around you," the AFL spokesman added.
"And that includes the players."
