PORT Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley admits his side is being shown up in defence in the absence of key defender Jackson Trengove.

Geelong's two big forwards, Tom Hawkins and James Podsiadly, booted 10 goals between them on Saturday in their side's 48-point win, and Hinkley said it was unfair to ask 188cm Tom Jonas to hold the fort.'

He said he'd look to bring in some young, tall talent in the next few weeks.

"We desperately miss Jackson (Trengove), there's no about that, you don't replace 197cm tall defenders who are influencing games for us," Hinkley said.

"We're asking Tommy Jonas at 188cm to play on a big bloke, we're trying to support Tommy and Alipate Carlile down there but it's a tough gig.

"We need another tall in form and in the side and we've got a couple.

"We've got Jack Hombsch playing, Tom Clurey's a youngster playing, so we’ve got an opportunity hopefully in the next couple of weeks to get a look at one or two of those boys."

Hinkley was upset but not shattered by his side's 48-point loss to the Cats.

As difficult as it was for the Power's players on Saturday, Hinkley insisted it was a beneficial experience to see first hand what "bold and brave football looks like".

"We've got lots and lots of work to do, we're a very young side and we're not being fooled by anything," he said.

"The first quarter they just got hold of us and from then on we were reasonable, without being great.

"The opposition are a benchmark of the competition. It's good for us to get that experience.

"It's just method and they trust their method and they've got it all figured out."
