Following Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert's comments on Thursday that it was a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ Thomas re-signed with the club, Thomas told radio station Nova 100 on Friday that things were not so clear cut.
"I've said the whole way through I'd love to stay at Collingwood but there are a lot of things that have to come into play," Thomas said.
"As far as my contract at the minute that is the last thing on my mind and the club's mind.
"There are lots more games to win and hopefully by the end of the year we have something to talk about, but until then there is nothing to talk about on that front."
Thomas, a restricted free agent, put off contract talks with Collingwood at the start of this season, saying he wanted to recover from the ankle surgery that delayed his start to the season until round three.
Thomas managed just five games before that injury resurfaced and has not played since round seven.
He said on Friday he was hopeful of returning in the late part of the season.
"I've got to process still through the rehab … starting off with baby steps, with literally walking a couple of laps today, hopefully, and then seeing how it all pulls up and progressing with running, then seeing how it gets to," Thomas said.
"Fingers crossed towards the latter part of the year I can return.
"Hopefully the boys can go deep into finals and I can get myself fit and be part of that."
Pert told Crocmedia's Sportsday radio program on Thursday he had no doubt Thomas would re-sign with the Magpies.
"He's said at the start of the year, 'I want to get myself fit, I want to get myself back in the team playing really good footy'. I fully understand why any player wouldn't want to be negotiating their contract when they're sitting in the grandstand every week," Pert said.
"Daisy's loved by everyone at the club, he's a critical part of our on-field efforts and will be for a long time."
