The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the weekend’s matches. The following charges were laid:

 

Jordan Lewis, Hawthorn, has been charged with a level two striking offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for striking Chad Wingard, Port Adelaide, during the first quarterof the round 16 match between Hawthorn and Port Adelaide, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday July 13, 2013.

 

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a level two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has a total of two matches suspended within the last two years, which does not impact on this offence. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

 

Shaun Burgoyne, Hawthorn, has been charged with a level three engaging in rough conduct offence (325 demerit points, three-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Tom Logan, Port Adelaide, during the third quarter of the round 16 match between Hawthorn and Port Adelaide, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday July 13, 2013.

 

In summary, he can accept a two-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a level three offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction.

 

Kane Cornes, Port Adelaide, has been charged with a level one engaging in rough conduct offence (225 demerit points, two-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Sam Mitchell, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the round 16 match between Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, played at AAMI Stadium on Saturday July 13, 2013.

 

In summary, due to a six-year good record, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a level two offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing six-year good record, reducing the penalty by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 126.56 points and a one-match sanction.

 

Steve Johnson, Geelong Cats, has been charged with a level one misconduct offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for misconduct in that he kneed Nathan Jones, Melbourne, during the second quarter of the round 16 match between the Geelong Cats and Melbourne, played at Simonds Stadium on Saturday July 13, 2013.

 

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of four matches suspended within the last two years, increasing the penalty by 20 per cent to 150 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He also has 79.04 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 229.04 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 171.78 points and a one-match sanction.

 

Ben McGlynn, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a level five striking offence (425 demerit points, four-match sanction) for striking Tom Scully, GWS Giants, during the first quarter of the round 16 match between the Sydney Swans and the GWS Giants, played at the SCG on Sunday July 14, 2013.

 

In summary, he can accept a three-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the GWS Giants Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of eight activation points, resulting in a classification of a level five offence, drawing 425 demerit points and a four-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 318.75 points and a three-match sanction.

 

Darren Glass, West Coast, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire ($1200 sanction) for making negligent contact with umpire Scott Jeffery during the first quarter of the round 16 match between West Coast and Fremantle, played at Patersons Stadium on Sunday July 14, 2013.

 

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

 

A first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire is a $1200 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $900 sanction.

 

Andrew Embley, West Coast, has been charged with a level three engaging in rough conduct offence (325 demerit points, three-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Clancee Pearce, Fremantle, during the third quarter of the round 16 match between West Coast and Fremantle, played at Patersons Stadium on Sunday July 14, 2013.

 

In summary, he can accept a two-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Fremantle  Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a level three offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of 68.75 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 393.85 points and a three-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 295.31 points and a two-match sanction.

 

Matthew Pavlich, Fremantle, has been charged with a level three bumping or making forceful contact from front-on to an opponent with his head over the ball (400 demerit points, four-match sanction) for bumping or making forceful contact from front-on against Mitch Brown, West Coast, during the third quarter of the round 16 match between Fremantle and West Coast, played at Patersons Stadium on Sunday July 14, 2013.

 

In summary, due to his previous poor record, he can accept a three-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the West Coast Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a level three offence, drawing 400 demerit points and a four-match sanction. He has 93.75 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 493.75 points and a four-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 370.31 points and a three-match sanction.

 

The match day report against the Gold Coast Suns’ Tom Murphy for kneeing Richmond’s Ricky Petterd was assessed. The ball was loose and heading towards the boundary line when Petterd dived towards the ball. Murphy was coming to the contest from the side and the Gold Coast player attempted to bump his Richmond opponent, rolling over the top of him. After viewing all available footage, receiving a medical report from the Richmond Football Club and speaking to the umpire who laid the report on the day, it was the view of the panel that Murphy’s actions were a legitimate attempt to bump. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between St Kilda’s David Armitage and Carlton’s David Armfield from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. Carlton’s Sam Rowe has the ball and Armfield runs past his teammate. As Rowe handballs the ball to Kade Simpson, Armfield is met with a bump from Armitage. After viewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Carlton Football Club, it was the view of the panel the bump was within five metres of the ball, there was no forceful high contact made and the bump was not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between North Melbourne’s Michael Firrito and the Brisbane Lions’ Ash McGrath from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball is kicked into the Brisbane forward line and Firrito runs toward the marking contest. McGrath is running in the opposite direction and turns into Firrito’s path and high contact is made. After viewing all available footage, it was the view of the panel that Firrito did not deviate from his initial line and there was no bumping action from the North Melbourne player. It was the view of the panel the high contact made was deemed to be accidental.
