THE CAREER of Brisbane Lions co-captain Jonathan Brown hangs in the balance after scans confirmed a serious foot injury to the 31-year-old.

Brown, who turns 32 in October and is uncontracted beyond this season, sustained a plantar fascia tear in his left foot in his team's win over St Kilda on Saturday night.

The Lions have listed Brown as 'indefinite' on their injury list, with the club confirming it will wait until the injury settles before a decision is made on treatment.

Brown's future beyond 2013 has been a talking point all season.

Leading sports medico Dr Peter Larkins told AFL.com.au on Monday, the injury would likely prevent Brown from returning before the end of this season.

"If you've ruptured it, you can't run or walk for a couple of weeks at best, and sometimes longer," Larkins said.

"You can jab them up and numb the whole bottom of your foot if you were desperate enough to play, but it's not a good thing or a good look.

"If they treat it properly, he won't play again this year.

"It is possible to play and they can put a pain block in, but it is very difficult."

Coach Michael Voss will address the media at a news conference in Brisbane on Tuesday morning.
