Defiant Woosha says he is capable of rebuilding Eagles
John Worsfold says he has the support of the board and wants to coach on in 2014
WEST Coast coach John Worsfold believes he is capable of turning the Eagles into a force again despite his side finishing 13th in the final year of his contract.
The Eagles finished the year with an 86-point hiding at the hands of Adelaide on Saturday night. They lost 13 matches for the season, nine at Patersons Stadium and their last three games by a combined total of 214 points.
Worsfold is due to present to the West Coast board in the next fortnight to discuss his and the club's future and while acknowledging there will be criticism of his team's performance, he still thinks he is the right man to lead them into 2014 and beyond.
"I'm capable of doing it," Worsfold said.
"I've done it a couple of times before and I'm capable of doing it. There's no doubt about that.
"After the last three weeks I would expect that there's been a swing one-way.
"I have belief in what I can bring and that won't wash with a lot of people, that's fine.
"I will progress with talking to the board in a couple of weeks and we will see what comes with that."
Worsfold expected his contract situation to be sorted by the middle of September but when asked if he had the full confidence of the board he replied: "Yeah, absolutely. Total board, yep.
"I look forward to presenting them with my ideas. I've done it before.
"I've probably done it six times over my coaching career so far. I've always had wonderful support from the board.
"They've always challenged me on things. They don't just sit there and say 'thanks, that's great, off you go'.
"They ask questions, they query things, they challenge you and that's their job. And it's my job to be confident enough to have the answers."
Worsfold admitted his side had under-performed and believes there are plenty of lessons to be learned from the season.
"There's a lot of things that have gone wrong," Worsfold said.
"As I've said to the players I've learned massive lessons this year and the challenge for me personally is to learn from those lessons and put things into place to be better, to be a better coach, prepare the team better, all those sorts of things.
"But overall we've under-performed and we'll accept that and cop the kicks when you're down, and that's no dramas, cop the criticism and listen to the feedback.
"It hurts. But it won't stop our drive to be a really good club and that's the way this club is."
