EMERGING midfielder Jack Steven has taken out his first Trevor Barker Award as St Kilda's Best and Fairest player at Docklands on Friday night.

Steven was the clear winner after a standout season, polling 152 votes to finish well ahead of Saints' veterans Nick Riewoldt (115) and Leigh Montagna (113).

In a season which has earned him an All-Australian nomination, the 23-year-old averaged 26.9 disposals and was in the league’s top 10 in clearances, handballs and disposals.

The 23 year-old acknowledged his elder players and spoke of his love of playing for the Saints in the larrikin fashion which has endeared him to fans.

"You'll have to bear with me here, I'm freaking out a fair bit," Steven said.

"Congratulations to these two legends (Riewoldt and Montagna), they have had a great year.

"I love to play for the Saints and I love all the boys I play with. I'm not much for standing up here, but I want to keep playing for the Saints. Thank you - have a good night."

Steven, who has played 73 games since arriving at the club in 2007, collected more than 30 possessions in seven games this season, including a career-best 47 disposals against Fremantle in Round 23.

It wasn't Steven's only recognition for the night, with retiring champion Stephen Milne handing down the honour of leading the singing of the Saints theme song post victory.
