HAWTHORN premiership heroes Brian Lake and Cyril Rioli will miss the start of next season, after accepting penalties from the Match Review Panel on Wednesday.

Lake will have to sit out the first three rounds of 2014, after pleading guilty to striking Fremantle's Michael Walters during the third quarter of the Grand Final.

The incident was assessed as a two-week offence, but double demerit points for the Grand Final extended the penalty to four weeks - which Lake was then able to reduce to three with a guilty plea.

Rioli was charged over his chicken-wing tackle on Docker Michael Barlow.

In a normal match, the small forward could have escaped with a reprimand with a guilty plea, but the double points loading meant a one-week suspension was his best-case scenario.
