In August the Lions announced their new elite administration and training facility at Springfield, 25km west of Brisbane city, would be open in mid-2016.
The previous Labor government had a budget commitment of $15 million under its Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF).
The remainder of cash for the $60 million project would come from the Lions, the AFL, Ipswich City Council and Springfield Land Corporation.
But now the facility is on hold, with the new Coalition government saying the project was not under contract and not guaranteed of funding.
A spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development said they were currently working through funding options.
"The issue of funding for uncontracted RDAF projects will be considered in the context of available funds and the delivery of the (newly formed) National Stronger Regions Fund," the spokesperson said.
The Lions have begun negotiations with the government to ensure funding goes ahead.
In a statement, the club said discussions had begun regarding the project and the options they have for it and benefits it could provide to the region and community.
For the time being, it's a setback they could do without.
Development is due to begin next year.
The first stage will include a MCG-sized field, lighting suitable for NAB Cup and NEAFL matches and first-class training and administration facilities.
The Lions and AFL have signed a heads of agreement – which includes a 99-year lease of the site to the Lions - with the Ipswich City Council and Springfield Land Corporation for the development of the facility.
