Eddie Betts stands tall as Blue boys reunite at Crows
New Crows small will have a big impact, says one who knows
NEW CROW Eddie Betts will make up for his small stature with a big on-field presence, according to Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs.
Jacobs played alongside Betts at Carlton and the pair returned to training together at West Lakes on Monday.
The Crows ruckman said his new teammate was great to watch, whether he was playing or preparing, and that while Monday might have been just his second training session at Adelaide, Betts had already asserted himself as a leader.
"I've trained with Eddie in the past ... he's pretty exciting on the track," Jacobs said.
"He's also quite vocal out there. It's only his second session and he's already telling blokes what to do.
"He's come back in really good nick and it's been documented how he's come back early, so he's excited about the change and the year ahead."
Monday's session was highlighted by Adelaide's five-minute run, where players cover as much ground as they can in five minutes.
Skipper Nathan van Berlo again blitzed the field, followed by Patrick Dangerfield and David Mackay.
Those recovering from knee reconstructions - Taylor Walker, Jared Petrenko and Ricky Henderson - did not do the run.
Tom Lynch (foot) kicked the ball with his injured teammates while Brent Reilly (shoulder) completed non-contact drills.
Jacobs said the playing group was focused on getting as much as possible out of every pre-season training session.
"Before training Sando said, ‘We've had our time away, but let's not forget the things we spoke about in the review at the end of the season' ... That's making sure we're training with purpose and that everyone is improving in the areas we identified," he said.
"We had a pretty hard review of everyone and we're looking forward to having another good, hard pre-season.
"You'll see some slimmer boys getting around come game time because that's the way the game is going now ... we've got to make sure we're running out games well."
Betts and Geelong premiership forward James Podsiadly have bolstered Adelaide's attack for 2014 and forward coach Mark Bickley insisted Podsiadly's leadership would prove invaluable.
Despite a disappointing 2013 both personally and for his side, Jacobs said the club had what it took to rebound strongly.
"We're very confident in the group we've got ... we've made some changes and we think we've improved the list, especially in the forward line," he said.
"Our membership is up already, so we're looking forward to getting 60,000 and getting to Adelaide Oval.
