Speaking to fans as part of a Twitter takeover on AFL.com.au, Buckley said his preference was for key defender Reid to play the 2014 season largely as a forward.
Reid spent a large chunk of the 2013 up forward as the Pies searched for the right mix to take some of the load off Cloke.
It paid off with Reid kicking 25 goals for the season, including bags of four and five late in the home and away rounds.
