FREMANTLE are looking to take it one step further in 2014, so who’s Fantasy scores will reflect the improvement?
The biggest lock for the Dockers is... Aaron Sandilands [RUC, $244,500]. Sandi is an elite ruckman - he has averaged over 90 Fantasy points for four years leading up to last year when his season was cruelled by injury and his average suffered, dropping to just 50 points per game.
From all reports, Sandi has been having his best pre-season in a long time and his body looks ready to allow the talented big man return to the dominance we know he is capable of.
His NAB Challenge form has been outstanding. In game one, Sandi was the Dockers' fourth leading Fantasy scorer with 71 points from 70 per cent game time with a massive 46 hit outs.
In game two, we witnessed the Sandi of old, complete domination in the big man department and a significant influence on the game. He was the Dockers' leading scorer with 122 points from 74 per cent game time, including a huge 47 hit outs.
Not only is Sandi the biggest lock for the Dockers, he is the biggest lock in the whole competition and currently the most selected player in AFL Fantasy.
A bargain on the radar is...former premium Matthew Pavlich [FWD, $393,100]. A previous walk-up selection in almost every coach's team, Pav is a forgotten man in the Fantasy world after injury limited his output in 2013, resulting in just nine games and a drop in average of 20 points per game to just 74 (his worst in 12 years).
Prior to last season, Pav was on an incredible run of eight years averaging over 90 points and in that time he showed amazing durability, missing just 10 games.
Pav’s form in the NAB Challenge has been impressive and certainly gives the impression that he is capable of returning to an average of over 90 this season. In game one he played 41 per cent of the game and scored 46 points and in game two he looked like the premium Pav we know and love with 95 points from 86 per cent game time including an impressive 11 marks and five shots on goal.
It is hard to believe, but Pav will be a unique selection to start the season, and for this price he is hard to ignore.
A player of difference is... Michael Barlow [MID, $567,000]. Formally one of the most selected players of the competition, Barlow holds a soft spot in the hearts of all coaches who have had him in their side. Despite this, he is often forgotten when selecting our elite premium mids.
When he was a rookie, we all had the mature age recruit. That year, his domination eventually forced us to bench our expensive premium players in his place as he went on to average a remarkable 110 in his first season.
Last season Barlow looked like he had fully recovered from 2011's serious leg injury and was back to his best. He finished 2014 with an average of 105 including 12 out of 15 hundred-point games to finish the season.
If you are looking for someone a little bit different to be your go-to man in the middle, don’t hesitate to back in Barlow.
The pre-season has taught us... we can unfortunately put a line through Colin Sylvia [FWD/MID, $443,600]. It was hoped that a fresh start at the Dockers could see Sylvia instantly return to the days when he regularly averaged over 90 points, including two impressive seasons of 95 and 96 where he was considered a premium forward.
In his first NAB Challenge game for his new club, Sylvia was less than inspiring with just five possessions and 29 points in 73 per cent game time. I think it will be a few hard months on the training track before we get another look at Sylvia in a Dockers' jumper again.
Twitter talk
Twitter question from @BrettPiercy “@RoyDT: Is Lachie Neale a third year breakout contender?”
Yes Brett, I think he is a sure thing to make a significant rise in average and value! Neale [MID, $405,400] caught my eye last year when he had a hot patch of form between round 19 and 22. His scores of 87, 103, 117 and 93 gave him a four week average of 100.
He averaged 77 for the year and is slightly discounted after playing only nine games.
Coach Roy currently has his eye on.... Sandi is locked into my ruck department and although he has been injury prone the last few seasons, I am happy to pick the big guy at this price and hope for the best. It is hard to ignore the class of Matthew Pavlich being available for less than $400K and his form during the pre-season has me unexpectedly shuffling players to see if I can squeeze him in.
