Roughead, Chapman among five in trouble with Match Review Panel
Roughead, Chapman among five offered bans after round eight
HAWTHORN forward Jarryd Roughead and Essendon's Paul Chapman have been offered one-week bans for their involvement in separate incidents in round eight.
The Match Review Panel charged Roughead with a level one engaging in rough conduct offence for his bump on Sydney Swans' opponent Ben McGlynn in the third quarter of Friday night's game at ANZ Stadium.
The knock forced McGlynn from the ground immediately but he returned to the field shortly afterwards and played out the game.
If he chooses to accept the ban he will miss the Hawks' critical clash against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval next week.
Roughead has not missed a game through suspension since his debut in 2005.
Roughead's ban must remain at one match even with a guilty plea because of carry-over demerit points from a previous offence.
Chapman was cited for striking after collecting the Brisbane Lions' Dayne Zorko in a hectic passage of play late in Saturday night's game at the Gabba.
Like Roughead, his one-match sanction will remain at one week even with an early plea because of carry-over demerit points due to a previous offence.
Roughead topped a list of four players charged by the MRP for rough conduct in round eight after an epidemic of bumps that collected opponents in the head.
The one-week suspension handed to Fremantle's Paul Duffield for bumping Port Adelaide's Chad Wingard can be reduced to a reprimand because of his good record over six years.
Mark LeCras was given a two-week sanction for his bump on the Giants' Will Hoskin-Elliott but the Eagles' forward can accept a one-week ban with an early plea.
The Western Bulldogs' Liam Jones was given a three-match sanction for his bump on Melbourne's Dean Terlich but it will be reduced to just two weeks if he accepts the sanction with an early plea.
The bump had dominated the news last week after Melbourne's Jack Viney was suspended for two weeks for his clash with Adelaide's Tom Lynch when the Tribunal found he had bumped his opponent. The decision was overturned on appeal.
Veteran Brisbane Lions defender Matt Maguire was also offered a one-week ban for tripping Essendon youngster Joe Daniher.
Although Maguire only incurred 80 demerit points for the offence, he had to carry-over 93.75 demerit points for an earlier offence. Even with a deduction for an early plea the sanction will remain at one match.
