NEAFL
GREATER Western Sydney forward Tom Boyd “still has a lot to learn” despite a starring role in the NEAFL on Sunday, says Giants reserves coach Brett Hand.

Boyd, last year's No.1 draft pick, kicked four goals in the Giants' 111-point win over Eastlake at a rain-sodden StarTrack Oval, including three in the first half.

Hand was pleased with Boyd's performance but said he has to learn more about running patterns and positioning.

"It wasn't easy for him because there were times when we had four guys around 200 (centimetres) on our forward line, in tough conditions," Hand said.

"To Tom's credit he was rewarded for a lot of hard work today. He worked a lot harder up high, and he also worked hard back towards the goalsquare and took a number of contested marks and kicked a few good goals, which will give him some confidence."

Boyd has played two AFL games, in rounds five and six, and didn't register a score in either game.

Fellow Giant Mark Whiley staked a strong claim for a return to the Giants' AFL side with a dominant display.

Whiley, who has played 10 AFL games but none so far this season, was easily best-afield with four goals and a stack of possessions.

Giants defenders Nathan Wilson and Zac Williams provided great dash from the back half, while ruckman Andrew Phillips gave the Giants' runners first use of the ball and James Stewart slotted three goals.

Rugby league convert Karmichael Hunt was Gold Coast's best player for the second-consecutive game, but the Suns were belted by the Brisbane Lions' reserves on Saturday.

Lions midfielder Rohan Bewick was outstanding and was well-supported by Stefan Martin and Tom Cutler.

Out-of-favour midfielder Brent Moloney was among the Lions' best in the 51-point victory.

Isaac Conway, tall forward Michael Close and rookie Jordon Bourke each booted three goals.

Timmy Sumner kicked three for the Suns, while Henry Schade added two majors.

At Drummoyne Oval, Brandon Jack was among the Sydney Swans' best in their win over the NT Thunder.

The 20-year-old kicked three goals in a strong response to being axed from the senior team.

Tim Membrey booted four majors, while rookie-listed Daniel Robertson was the Swans' best player.

Greater Western Sydney youngsters Tom Boyd and Mark Whiley snared four goals apiece and James Stewart slotted three in the Giants' 111-point win over Eastlake at StarTrack Oval on Sunday.

VFL
DUMPED forward Ty Vickery impressed as Richmond overcame Essendon by 36 points at Punt Road on Saturday.

The maligned big man went goalless, but gathered 21 touches and improved his work-rate around the ground.

On his 24th birthday, Vickery worked deep into defence and across the wings to find the football and his ruckwork was valuable for the Tigers.

A deft tap down the throat of Sam Lloyd led to a brilliant snap for goal from deep in the pocket in the second quarter.

It was a solid response from the 200cm big man after he was dropped from the senior side this week.

"Ty was stiff to get dropped after kicking a couple last week," Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke told AFL.com.au.

"He came back here with an unbelievably good attitude, really helped the boys, really led the forward line like we expected him to do.

"(He had) 13 or 14 marks … he really contributed today and if we had used him more inside 50 he probably would have kicked three or four but it just didn't happen today."

Veteran ruckman Orren Stephenson received the Sir Doug Nicholls Medal in the VFL's inaugural indigenous-themed fixture with a superb display at the stoppages and three goals.

Medium-sized forward Aaron Edwards overcame illness to boot 4.6 for the Tigers, while Anthony Miles had 35 touches.

Ricky Petterd came on after half-time and had more than 20 touches. Richmond's win was soured by a foot injury that forced Kamdyn McIntosh from the ground in the second term.

Rookie-listed Essendon forward Corey Dell'Olio was a handful in attack with four majors and was the Bombers' best player.

Leroy Jetta and Travis Colyer also tried hard for the visitors.

Richmond's clash against Essendon was the only VFL game this weekend because of the state game against South Australia, with the SANFL clubs having a week off.

In the state match, the SANFL extended its decade-long winning streak over Victoria after coming from 11 points down in the final term to win 18.10 (118) to 14.12 (96) at North Port Oval.
