Hogan was placed on the club's long-term injury list in April after he was diagnosed with stress reactions in his back.
Demons elite performance manager Dave Misson said the 19-year-old was ready to begin the first phase of his recovery as he eyes off his AFL debut later this year.
"Jesse is essentially asymptomatic with his back, that's really pleasing," Misson told melbournefc.com.au.
"We're looking to start running him towards the end of the week, so it's a significant step forward for Jesse and hopefully things will progress quickly from there."
During his lay-off, Hogan has sought advice from Geelong forward Tom Hawkins, whose own long-term back issue impeded him for much of last season.
The pair met for coffee and Hawkins gave Hogan advice on how best to manage such a debilitating injury.
"Our issues are different but I think the concept of getting over an injury is the same," Hawkins told radio station Triple M last month.
"I felt I had a really good support network with physios, docs and coaches, family and friends.
"You need to surround yourself with really positive people, and he is going to get frustrated and down on himself at times and it's a matter of staying positive and having good people around you.
"No doubt he is a really exciting player."
Meanwhile, veteran Shannon Byrnes is set to run on Thursday but is still two to three weeks away from making his return from a foot injury.
Young ruckman Jake Spencer is still a month away with his ankle injury, while Mitch Clisby is on the same timeline as Byrnes as he returns from a quad complaint.
