The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the matches played in Round 19. The following charges were laid:

 

Nick Graham, Carlton, has been charged with a level one engaging in rough conduct offence (125 demerit points, one match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Ryan Crowley, Fremantle, during the third quarter of the Round 19 match between Carlton and Fremantle, played at Patersons Stadium on Thursday July 31, 2014.

 

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Fremantle Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of three activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

 

Dyson Heppell, Essendon, has been charged with a first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire ($1200 sanction) for making negligent contact with umpire Ray Chamberlain during  the second quarter of the Round 19 match between Essendon and the Sydney Swans, played at the SCG on Friday August 1, 2014.

 

In summary, he can accept a $900 sanction with an early plea.

An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction.

 

Steve Johnson, Geelong Cats, has been charged with a level one misconduct (kneeing) offence for kneeing Scott Thompson, North Melbourne, during the first quarter of the Round 19 match between the Geelong Cats and North Melbourne, played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday August 2, 2014.

 

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the North Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of six matches suspended within the last two years, increasing the penalty by 40 per cent to 175 demerit points and a one-match suspension. He also has 75.71 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 250.71 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 188.03 points and a one-match sanction.

 

Jack Newnes, St Kilda, has been charged with a first offence for wrestling ($1200 sanction) for wrestling Tom Lynch, Gold Coast Suns, during the first quarter of the Round 19 match between St Kilda and the Gold Coast Suns, played at Metricon Stadium on Saturday August 2, 2014.

Tom Liberatore, Western Bulldogs, has been charged with a first offence for making reckless contact with an umpire ($2600 sanction) for making reckless contact with umpire Justin Schmitt during the first quarter of the Round 19 match between the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn, played at Aurora Stadium on Sunday August 3, 2014.

The match day report laid against the Brisbane Lions’ Daniel Merrett for striking Melbourne’s Cam Pedersen was assessed. Melbourne’s Dom Tyson had the ball and kicked towards his teammate Pedersen. As Pedersen was preparing to mark, Merrett, who had his eyes on the ball, reached up to spoil with his left arm. Merrett made contact with the ball with his left arm in his spoiling action and also made high contact to Pedersen at the same time. It was the view of the panel that Merrett’s action was a legitimate attempt to spoil and the high contact made was deemed to be accidental as part of the spoiling motion. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between Carlton’s Marc Murphy and Fremantle’s Ryan Crowley from the first quarter of Thursday’s match was assessed. After reviewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Fremantle Football Club, it was the view of the panel the force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between the Geelong Cats’ James Kelly and North Melbourne’s Lindsay Thomas from the third quarter of Saturday’s game was assessed. Thomas had the ball kicked to him by teammate Ben Cunnington. As Thomas prepares to approach the ball, Geelong’s Kelly places a hand on Thomas’ back. A free kick was paid at the time for a hands-in-the-back infringement, which has been judged by the umpiring department to be a correct decision. It was the view of the panel that while Thomas propelled himself forward after the initial contact by Kelly, there had been contact to his back. No further action was taken.
