Future leader inks new two-year contract extension with the club
MELBOURNE has re-signed emerging midfielder Jack Viney for a further two seasons.
Viney was already contracted until the end of next season, but the extension will now tie him to the club until the end of 2017.
"I'm really happy with the direction of the club at the moment and to get Simon Goodwin on board as the successor of Roosy – I think it's a really good time to be at the club and I think we're going to be playing some pretty successful footy in future years," Viney told the club's website.
"The security of having three years is really, really good and it just gives you a peace of mind of where you’re going to be playing your footy at."
The 20-year-old averaged a tick under 20 disposals per game from 20 matches in 2014, playing a number of roles in Paul Roos' first season in charge.
Viney spent time at half-forward and was given some run-with roles against some of the competition's best midfielders, including Western Bulldogs on-baller Tom Liberatore, to further round out his development.
The club believes Viney is a future midfield star, leading a core group that will also include talented youngsters Dom Tyson and eventually Christian Salem.
Viney has already been pegged as a future leader of Melbourne, having displayed the kinds of qualities rarely seen in a young player.
His 11th place finish in the club's best and fairest award was another example of the respect he commands at the Demons.
Heading into his third season at AFL level, Viney is injury free and ready to attack another pre-season when training kicks off in November.
Viney was chosen by the Demons as a father-son selection – the son of club great Todd – with pick No. 26 in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft.
