West Coast ruckman suffers compound fracture at training
WEST Coast big man Callum Sinclair will have surgery on his finger after suffering a compound fracture at training on Wednesday.
It is an unfortunate injury for the mature-age ruckman who had been very impressive during the early part of pre-season having been upgraded from the rookie list.
Following the procedure, Sinclair is expected to be back running again during the Christmas break and should return to skills work in the second week of training in January.
Sinclair's misfortune comes hot on the heels of Scott Selwood suffering a setback with his troublesome ankle after he was sent in for further surgery last week.
The 24-year-old first injured his ankle in round three last season against St Kilda and battled on bravely until he finally had surgery following the round 12 loss to Hawthorn.
The 2012 best and fairest returned to play the last game of the season in round 23 and had been participating in the early part of pre-season training before this latest setback.
AFL.com.au understands that Selwood has progressed well from the follow-up procedure and is expected to begin running during the Christmas break.
Selwood is scheduled to build his running base through January for a return to full training in February and it is expected that he will be available for some of the NAB Challenge matches.
The Eagles suffered a significant injury toll during last season however the majority of the players wounded appear to be progressing well.
Beau Waters trained very strongly on Monday without any restriction following a frustrating 18 months due to multiple shoulder surgeries.
Eric Mackenzie (hip), Sharrod Wellingham (knee), Matt Rosa (pectoral muscle) and Elliot Yeo (hand) did not train with the main group, however all ran very strongly as they did some conditioning work.
Xavier Ellis (AC joint), Jeremy McGovern (hip) and Jack Darling (foot) are still being carefully managed prior to Christmas while rookie Murray Newman is battling his way back from a minor ankle injury he suffered at training a couple of weeks ago.
