UNDER Guy McKenna's leadership the Suns steadily improved each year to a point where, if not for a certain injury to a certain marquee player, the team would have undoubtedly played finals in 2014.
From an outsider's point of view, that’s pretty good tracking in just four years.
However, Gold Coast powerbrokers believed McKenna was not the man to take the team to 'the next step'.
Enter Rodney Eade. Nearly two decades ago - and we can probably call the 90s prehistoric times where giants called Plugger, Duck, God and Godra ruled the world - Eade took the Swans to a Grand Final. He last coached in 2011 and, although his record was very good at the Bulldogs, it should be noted he did not take them to the final day in September (which some people might describe as 'the next step').
Rocket has been a masterful tactician over the years and is credited with pioneering 'the flood' - but that was a long time ago. Four years ago the Dogs removed him from their senior coaching position - that too is a fair while ago in football years.
It all raises the questions: Is Eade yesterday’s man? Did the Suns pull the wrong rein by sacking McKenna? Or do we just accept it's only two rounds in and there are multiple factors, including injuries, that have contributed to the Suns' horror start to 2015?
No matter how you slice and dice it, losses to Melbourne and St Kilda don’t look good, with or without Gary Ablett, Jaeger O’Meara and Charlie Dixon. What do you think?
