ADELAIDE is welcome to contact Melbourne's coach-in-waiting Simon Goodwin about its senior coaching position but Goodwin will be staying at the Demons, says Paul Roos.

Goodwin is due to take over as senior coach at Melbourne in 2017 after signing a five-year deal with the club at the start of this season. That deal included spending two years as an assistant to Roos before assuming the job.

However, Channel Nine reported on Thursday night that the Crows would ask Goodwin about the senior coaching role, now vacant after the death of Phil Walsh.

"Goody [Goodwin] is committed to the footy club and we're really pleased to have him and he is making a significant contribution here," Roos said.

"I'm not sure there is much else I can say other than that he will be coaching the Melbourne Football Club and the Melbourne fans will be pretty excited when he does."

Goodwin accepted the Melbourne job before Adelaide sacked Brenton Sanderson at the end of last season and he re-affirmed his commitment to the Demons at that time rather than exploring the option of returning to the Crows (where he played in two premierships and eventually captained).

Roos said he could not speak more highly of Goodwin's performance as an assistant and he thinks the 38-year-old, who is doing the AFL's level four coaching course this year, sees the Melbourne job as a win-win situation.

"Part of what he wanted to do is learn some more and he saw this as a terrific opportunity," Roos said.

"There is good young list. [He's] working with a lot of young guys and [he can] mould them into the players he wants them to be eventually."
