THE AFL umpires department has conceded it got several free kicks wrong from the weekend's preliminary finals.

Head umpires coach Hayden Kennedy came to the conclusion after his department spent Monday closely reviewing every decision paid, and said the parochial Perth crowds couldn't be blamed for mistakes.

"There was just a couple wrong on the weekend that we would have loved to got right," Kennedy told AFL.com.au.

"There were certainly a few decisions that came to the attention of the media and spectators.

"Every umpire knows when they go to Perth, or Adelaide and Geelong for that matter, they're difficult places to umpire because of the bias of the crowd."

Kennedy said North Melbourne's Ben Jacobs should have received a free kick in the last quarter in the loss to West Coast after Eagle Luke Shuey took his legs out.

"It went through the umpire’s mind at the time because you could actually see his whistle go to his mouth," Kennedy said

"We had two umpires in really good positions for that, so we would have loved for a free to be paid."

An off-the-ball incident involving Fremantle's Hayden Ballantyne and Hawthorn's Matt Suckling has been given the tick of approval.

"I'm really comfortable with that decision because if you look at the down the ground vision Hayden moves in the direction of (Suckling) and makes contact," Kennedy said.

"There are lots of places Ballantyne could have run and we believe it was a correct free kick."

The AFL will announce on Tuesday which umpires have earned the right to officiate in Saturday's Grand Final, with Brett Rosebury, Dean Margetts, Matt Stevic, Simon Meredith, Ray Chamberlain and Jeff Dalgleish vying for the three coveted spots.
