WEST Coast young gun Dom Sheed has had minor surgery to clean out his left knee but is expected to return to full training after Christmas.

Sheed was unable to participate in the Eagles' final training before the Christmas break on Friday in Perth.

The inside midfielder had a compression bandage on his left knee following the clean out he had recently. He was only able to use a scooter to do some cardio/strength work with just his right leg.

Sheed, 20, is coming off an outstanding second season where he finished third in the NAB AFL Rising Star award after averaging 19 disposals in 23 games for the Eagles. 

Draftee Kurt Mutimer and veteran defender Will Schofield also did some running away from the main group on Friday. Mutimer is recovering from a minor hamstring issue while Schofield is easing his way back from an ankle injury in the off-season. 

New recruit Jack Redden also failed to appear but is expected to return to full training in January having had adductor surgery in August.

The Eagles squad looked sharp in the warm and windy conditions as they went through some skill work before moving into match-simulation drills.

Nic Naitanui looked in excellent shape as he did some work alongside Scott Lycett. The pair did some low intensity boundary throw-in work with ruck and stoppage coach Dean Cox. 

Draftees Luke Partington, Tom Cole, Matthew Allen, Jordan Snadden and second-year midfielder Liam Duggan were held out of a couple of drills but did some work on their goalkicking.

Duggan is still easing his way back from the posterior cruciate injury to his right knee that ended his season in July. 

The Eagles will return to pre-season training on January 4.
