ST KILDA won't be any worse off despite its game against the Brisbane Lions last Sunday being cancelled, says Saints midfielder Maverick Weller.
It was meant to be the second game of St Kilda's pre-season, but torrential rain in Mackay meant the AFL had to call the game off, deeming the surface too unsafe to play on.
A patch of grass close to the centre square floated away, such were the conditions.
Weller said it was the right decision to call the game off.
"In the end, I think common sense prevailed. It would've been a tragedy if we had of played and if someone got hurt," Weller said.
"It wasn't ideal. We were always going to get back pretty late, so it hasn't changed anything (in terms of travel arrangements).
"Seeing that patch of grass, Rocky (Lions captain Tom Rockliff) and Joey (St Kilda's Leigh Montagna) showed a lot of leadership going out there and testing it out, being representatives of the AFLPA.
"I'd never seen anything like it really. 500mm of rain in five days is just unbelievable."
The Saints went for a run to make up for the missed game.
"We just wanted to get something out of it. (The run was) pretty low key," he said.
"(Missing the game) won't hiccup our preparations at all."
St Kilda hasn't played since it lost to North Melbourne by 44 points over a fortnight ago, but the players were at Seaford Beach on Monday to do their recovery.
Having returned to Melbourne shortly after midnight on Monday, the Saints completed a planned recovery session at Seaford Beach later that day.
Weller said it happened as part of the footballers' weekly preparation.
"It was just a routine thing. Monday was always going to look like this. It refreshes the mind as well."
Captain Nick Riewoldt was originally set to play against the Lions but didn't fly to Queensland. Weller said the skipper had been sick but should be fine to play in St Kilda's final pre-season game against Melbourne on Sunday.
The AFL is yet to discuss the possibility of holding a 2017 NAB Challenge game in Mackay to make up for Sunday's missed opportunity for the fans.
