ESSENDON speedster Travis Colyer has become the second banned Bomber to confirm he will return to the club in 2017 after signing a two-year contract extension.

Colyer is one of 12 current Essendon players serving a 12-month doping suspension following the decision handed down by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in January.

The 24-year-old has signed a two-year contract extension that will see him remain at the Bombers until the end of 2019.

He becomes the second banned Bomber to re-sign after Heath Hocking recommitted for 2017.

Colyer said Essendon was a very important part of his life and that is why he wanted to remain there. 

"This contract will take me to 10 years at the Essendon Football Club," Colyer said.

"The club means so much to me and is such an important part of my life.

"Working towards achieving success as a team is the ultimate reason you play football, and it's the ultimate reason I wanted to come back to the football club.

"We're in a position where we have such an exciting list, I can see the improvement in the young players and that success isn’t too far away."

Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell said Colyer's decision to re-sign was another very significant moment for the club moving forward.

"To have Heath and now Travis recommit to the club is fantastic news," Campbell said.

"Trav is a wonderful young leader and to have him recommit to the club for the next three years is testament to the direction and culture John Worsfold is building amongst our playing group.

"We are working hard to establish a football program that can achieve sustained success and Trav will play an important role in helping us reach that vision."

Colyer has been training with the group of banned Bombers but the contract situations of some of his teammates remain up in the air.

Cale Hooker is set to become an unrestricted free agent and has attracted plenty of interest from other clubs. Brent Stanton, David Myers and Tayte Pears also qualify as free agents at the end of 2016, while Ben Howlett's contract ends.

There is also speculation around the futures of Dyson Heppell and Michael Hurley despite both being contracted to return to the Bombers following the end of their suspension.
