JAEGER O'Meara will have arthroscopic surgery on his knee on Thursday and will not play again this season.
O'Meara played his first game in 15 months in early July following a ruptured patella tendon, but has missed the past three weeks with knee soreness.
General manager of football operations Marcus Ashcroft said the surgery was unrelated to his previous injury, but following extensive medical advice, was deemed the best course of action.
"It’s really minor surgery, it’s just an arthroscope, just a minor clean up," Ashcroft said.
Fellow midfielder Jesse Lonergan is also done for the season, requiring shoulder surgery, but in better news for the Suns, David Swallow is expected to play his first game for 2016 in the NEAFL on Sunday.
Swallow hasn't played in 13 months with an assortment of knee injuries pausing his 79-game career.
"He’s got through the last couple of weeks really well," Ashcroft said.
"(If) he gets through training on Thursday then he’ll be available to play in the reserves on Sunday."
Tom Nicholls (knee) and Alex Sexton (corked thigh) will both be unavailable to play Essendon on Sunday after suffering injuries in last weekend's loss to Greater Western Sydney.
