INJURED Magpie Dane Swan remains "in limbo" as he weighs up whether to play on in 2017, Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley says.

The star midfielder broke his foot in the first quarter of the season opener against the Sydney Swans and had surgery to repair three broken bones in his foot.

Swan said earlier this month he expected to make a decision on his future before the end of the 2016 season.

"Right now he's in limbo a little bit. He's still trying to work out what his body's capable of and how his foot is healing," Buckley said.

"The next surgical opinion isn't going to be until late September, so he's working away now to make sure he's in shape to keep next year on the radar.

"We've got more immediate things in front of us and Swanny is working away with our other boys in rehab that are no longer in season 2016.

"Clearly [with] the journey he's travelled, he's going to have a big say in what he wants to do."

Collingwood is already preparing a number of its injured players for 2017 as it looks to turn its fortunes around after another disappointing season.

Matt Scharenberg and Jackson Ramsay were both in full training at Olympic Park on Tuesday as they recover from season-ending knee injuries.

Scharenberg ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in pre-season training in late November. He previously tore the ACL in his left knee in 2014.

Ramsay played the first two games of the season and appeared to be developing nicely until he ruptured his ACL at training in April.

Ben Sinclair, who has been ruled out for the remaining two games after his fourth concussion of the year, also joined teammates out on the track but has been taken out of contact training.

Forward Jamie Elliott, who did not play a game in 2016 due to a chronic back problem, is on holiday in Europe and the club expects him to return fit and raring to go for pre-season training.

"We've got quite a few boys who have really started preparation for 2017 in many ways," Buckley said.

"At the same time they're supportive of their teammates and our wishes to finish this season off as strongly as we can, but it's good to see them out on the track."

The Magpies are still waiting on the surgeon's opinion on Ben Reid's knee injury, after he was ruled out of the remaining two games.

Midfielder Taylor Adams (ankle) has also been put on ice and won't play against Gold Coast or Hawthorn.
