CAM McCarthy might have given up on Greater Western Sydney, but coach Leon Cameron still hasn't lost all hope of getting the troubled forward back to his club. 

McCarthy walked out last year after the Giants refused to trade him to Fremantle as the forward sought to be closer to his family and began to work through some mental health issues. 

GWS officials have maintained a stance that they hoped the 21-year-old would find his way back to Sydney after spending time in WA, but McCarthy has sat out the season after booting 35 goals in a breakout performance last year. 

The Giants knocked back several offers from the Dockers for the contracted forward at last year's trade period, but are now all but resigned to the fact that McCarthy won't play for the club again.

"There's no doubt the two Perth clubs are going to be interested in him," Cameron said on Friday. 

"I've always held onto a one per cent chance that we could hold onto him. 

"I'll continue to hold onto that until a deal is done, but it's really good that he's enjoying life again, and he's got a little bit of passion back to play the game again one day. 

"Whether that’s at our footy club or one of the WA clubs, we'll determine that half way through October."

The Dockers' 2016 trade offer for McCarthy is likely to be substantially less than the one that could have seen the club hand over two first round selections last year, but there's seems little doubt that he'll end up at Fremantle.

Cameron said the most important thing was that McCarthy, who has been training with WAFL club South Fremantle during the year, was in a much better mental state than when he left the club.

"He's done a fair bit work down at South Freo which is great for his mind," the Giants coach said. 

"He's feeling pretty good about himself and he's doing some part-time work. 

"Having mum and dad, and people in his life to help him through the issues he's had over the past nine months, has helped him."
