LUCKLESS Sydney Swans midfielder Daniel Robinson has signed a two-year contract extension and is hopeful his 2016 season is still alive.
Robinson, who hasn't played a game at any level since suffering a serious shoulder injury against Essendon round seven at the SCG, was set to come out of contract at the end of the year, but is now a Swan until at least the end of 2018.
The 22-year-old impressed in four appearances last season before a broken collarbone in the NEAFL wrecked his year, but managed to establish himself in the powerful Swans midfield by playing the first seven games this season until he went down against the Bombers.
After undergoing a shoulder reconstruction, Robinson admits he initially had some concerns about his contract status, but the club quickly alleviated them.
"I'm lucky that the Swans have been really positive with me the whole way through, so that gave me the confidence to make sure my shoulder and the rehab came first, and trust that the rest would sort itself out," he told AFL.com.au on Monday.
"It's really pleasing that I've been able to put pen to paper and I'm looking forward to the next couple of years with an exciting group of guys.
"It's been a frustrating season to say the least, so to have some positive news going forward is really pleasing.
"To get my foot in the door and get the opportunity, then start to play some senior footy consistently and have it shut down, was really frustrating."
A senior return looks an almighty long shot in 2016, but Robinson said that goal has helped him through the past three months of rehabilitation, and the skillful onballer hasn't given up hope of playing a part in the Swans' finals series.
He plans on taking the field for the reserves in their first final during the AFL's bye round next week, in a bid to put his hand up if a spot opens up in John Longmire's 22.
"I'm still hopeful that there's that miracle for me, but just to be involved has been pretty important," he said.
"When you're in rehab it's a pretty lonely place, so just be out there with the main group and be a part of what could be a special push through the finals, that’s been a pretty important driving factor.
"Obviously you need to prepare yourself to make sure you're ready if an opportunity does arise (at senior level)."
Robinson joins his coach and teammates Luke Parker, Kieren jack and Nick Smith, who have all signed new contracts this year.
