ESSENDON has locked in a key plank of its future, re-signing Aaron Francis to a two-year contract extension.

AFL.com.au reported last month Essendon had opened talks for a new deal and things have moved quickly, with Francis signing on until the end of 2019.

It is a boost for the Bombers, who are very excited about the young South Australian after he played three senior games for the club in his debut season.

"Aaron is an exciting young player who, despite some injury setbacks, has shown his versatility to be able to play both forward and back," Essendon football manager Rob Kerr said.

"He is a committed young footballer who is very hungry to learn and develop – he's a fierce competitor and is regarded as an important part of our club's future.

"Aaron provides great strength to our young talent that Essendon supporters can enjoy watching develop over the next few years."

Francis produced some stunning moments at VFL level this season between a couple of soft-tissue injuries, being stationed mostly across half-back.

But he has also shown exciting signs in the midfield and next year may be used in the forward line at senior level, with his marking prowess and skill level key traits.

"Making my debut earlier this year was a dream come true, and now I've had a taste of senior football I'm committed to working hard on my game so I can cement my spot in the side," Francis said.

Essendon will now be keen to re-sign Darcy Parish to a new deal after the youngster's top-10 finish in its best and fairest this year.

Contract discussions for Parish to sign on beyond the end of 2017 started earlier this season.
