GREATER Western Sydney defender Pat McKenna has found a new home after being traded to Melbourne on Thursday.

McKenna, who failed to play a senior game in his two seasons at the Giants, heads to the Demons on a two-year contract, along with picks 51 and 69, in exchange for picks 57 and 59.

The 20-year-old never looked likely to make his debut in Sydney after an injury-interrupted 2015 season, but showed signs of promise late this season, and was one of the Giants' best in their NEAFL Grand Final win over the Sydney Swans.

A talented junior cricketer, McKenna captained an Australian under 19's tour of Sri Lanka just months before GWS selected him with pick 23 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

He adds more depth to Melbourne's young list after the Demons secured Hawthorn champion Jordan Lewis and Essendon defender Michael Hibberd earlier in this year's NAB AFL trade period.

Melbourne were keen on drafting McKenna back in 2014, and footy operations boss Josh Mahoney said the club is happy to finally get him on board.

"Pat McKenna is a player that our recruiters have been following closely for the past two years," he said.

"He is a good-decision maker who uses the ball well. His endurance is a strong point of his game and he is a versatile player that can play all parts of the ground. 

"When considering the amount of work we’ve done tracking Pat over the past two years – and taking into account our current draft position – we feel like this investment is better than what would've been available at the back end of this year's draft."
