GREATER Western Sydney has been fined $100,000 and 1000 draft points for the actions of two club officials, Graeme Allan and Craig Lambert, and its player Lachie Whitfield, that saw the club charged with conduct unbecoming.

The club's charge followed an incident last year where Allan and Lambert arranged for Whitfield to stay at Lambert's house in order to avoid the possibility of a drug test out of fear he may fail it. 

A sub-committee of the AFL Commission consisting of chairman Mike Fitzpatrick and commission members Jason Ball and Paul Bassat made the decision on Thursday morning that the club had to bear some responsibility for the affair after hearing from the Giants. 

However the sub-committee noted that the club board, chief executive Dave Matthews and chief operating officer had no knowledge of the conduct so their governance could not be criticised.

Despite the mitigating factors, the AFL still decided the club had to be penalised. 

The Giants had been formally charged in November with "conduct which is unbecoming or likely to prejudice the interests or reputation of the AFL or to bring the game of football into disrepute". 

However the decision was deferred until after this year's NAB AFL Draft when the club decided to contest the charge. 

In terms of penalty, if the Giants finish fourth again in 2017, their draft selection no.15 (1112 points) would become pick no.63 (112 points). 

Allan had left the Giants and joined Collingwood before he was finally charged in 2016. 

However he resigned from his position as Collingwood football manager when he received a 12-month suspension in November.

Lambert joined the Brisbane Lions as the club's welfare officer and is serving his one-year ban while Whitfield received a six-month suspension which will keep him sidelined until round eight.

The Giants said in a statement on Thursday afternoon: "The club takes integrity matters extremely seriously and has cooperated fully with the AFL on this matter from the outset. Whilst disappointed, the club now accepts the decision handed down and will move forward positively towards the 2017 season."
