FOOTBALL fans want State of Origin to make a comeback.

Not since Victoria took on South Australia at the MCG in 1999 has interstate football rivalry been inflamed by a representative clash.

But fans' passion to revive State of Origin is overwhelming.

Of the 67,000-plus fans who voted on AFL.com.au's poll as of midday on Thursday, 92 per cent want to see their state back in action again.

Only eight per cent believe the concept is outdated.

State teams: We name the best of the best

Various reasons have been offered for the demise of State of Origin – including a lack of public interest.

Only 26,063 fans turned up to watch the 1999 clash between the 'Big V' and 'Croweaters'.

The potential for injuries, clubs not releasing star players, a packed fixture that currently only allows for one bye per team and the successful national competition have also been thrown up as roadblocks.
