THE AFL will consider trucking its own turf to Sydney to ensure ANZ Stadium is able to host a Swans-Giants preliminary final.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan says a clash between Sydney and Greater Western Sydney could attract the biggest ever crowd for a game outside Victoria.

The 2016 Giants-Swans qualifying final was the last AFL match played at ANZ Stadium, and the ground's surface would need work to return to League standard.

"The cheapest solution is to truck turf up that we have prepared for Etihad Stadium and then take it back," McLachlan told News Corp.

"The plan would be to lay it down early in the week and then pick it up, put it in a truck and take it home.

"It would be a couple of hundred thousand dollars cheaper to truck the turf in. The turf in Victoria belongs to us, it's in a farm north one hour north of Melbourne."

With 5000 square metres of turf to be laid, it was estimated last month that it would cost about $500,000 to bring the turf up to scratch for an AFL finals clash.

However, bringing up the AFL's own grass, which is being prepared for Etihad Stadium, could cut that expense by $200,000.

GWS and Sydney would face off in a preliminary final if the Giants defeat Adelaide on Thursday night and Sydney wins its next two matches against Essendon on Saturday and then the loser of the Richmond-Geelong qualifying final clash.

"We want our finals to have as many people get there as we can," McLachlan said.

"If you have the opportunity for 70,000 to go to a game, and there is the chance to get into a Grand Final, I think it would be a huge event and we should play it on the biggest stage we can. That's what finals are about."

McLachlan said there had been ongoing discussions between the AFL's fixture team and the NRL, which may have its own preliminary final game at ANZ Stadium on the same weekend as a Giants-Swans clash.
