SUPERSTAR midfielder Gary Ablett remains on track to play in Geelong's round one clash with Melbourne despite a hamstring complaint surfacing last week.

Ablett has enjoyed a strong pre-season in his return to the Cats after seven seasons with Gold Coast, but had a hiccup after complaining of hamstring tightness at a training session last week.

He remains a chance to play in the Cats' second JLT Community Series clash, against Essendon in Colac on March 11, but if not then he says will be fine to take on the Dees for his Geelong homecoming.

"You see that all the time in pre-season. We're training pretty hard at the moment. We had three solid sessions in the space of a week, and I pulled up a little bit tight in the hammy," the dual Brownlow medallist said on Tuesday.

"But it's fine. We've had a scan, it's only very low grade."

Ablett has been restricted by injury in the past three seasons, playing 34 of a possible 66 games for the Suns since the start of 2015.

The former Suns skipper requested a trade back to the Cats at the end of last season, but does not have any fears about his durability this season.

"I've had little niggling injuries like this throughout my whole career, but as I've got older they seem to be talked about a lot more," Ablett said.

"As I said, that's all part of pre-season. We're training ourselves pretty hard, we're taking our bodies to the edge to try and get our legs conditioned, and I'm not concerned at all."

The 33-year-old champion midfielder has won six club best and fairest awards and also been named the AFL's MVP five times in a brilliant career.

The Cats play their first pre-season game on Sunday at Riverway Stadium in Townsville against the Suns.
