WESTERN Bulldogs premiership player Shane Biggs has retired aged just 27.

Biggs, who was an important member of the Dogs' 2016 Grand Final win over Sydney, informed the club on Thursday he would be leaving the game.

He was out of contract at the end of this season.

Biggs played 63 games in his career, which began when he was rookie-listed to Sydney at the end of 2012.
He played six games for the Swans before landing at the Bulldogs at the end of 2014, where he found his niche as a running defender. 

"I've been incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to play at the highest level for two great clubs," Biggs said in a statement. 

"I've made some great mates in the game and some incredible memories which will stick with me forever.

"It has been a great experience, but it's time for me to explore other opportunities outside of footy and I'm excited about finding some new challenges.

"I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the journey, particularly my teammates and my coaches, and to the fans for their support."

Biggs has managed only five games in 2018 and 21 senior appearances since the club's breakthrough premiership.

"Shane has been a valued member of our playing group for the last four seasons, and we are grateful for all the hard work he has put in during his time at the club,” said Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge. 

"He can be proud that he leaves the game as a premiership player, and for the impact he has had on everyone at the football club."

A number of senior Dogs still remain out of contract heading into the off-season, including restricted free agents Jordan Roughead and Mitch Wallis, and unrestricted free agents Luke Dahlhaus and Tom Liberatore.
The Bulldogs will close their season against Richmond at the MCG on Saturday.
