CARLTON appears set to win the race for former Australian basketballer Matt Owies, who will join the club as a Category B rookie ahead of the 2019 season.
AFL.com.au understands Carlton finalised the paperwork to recruit Owies on Friday afternoon, beating competition from Geelong for his signature.
The 183cm guard was a talented junior footballer, before travelling to the United States in 2016 after earning a four-year athletic college scholarship at the University of Hawaii.
The 21-year-old Owies appeared in 27 games for the University of Hawaii, averaging 11.6 minutes off the bench, before transferring to Seattle University in May last year.
He was redshirted throughout the entirety of the 2017/18 college season, before returning home to his native Victoria at the conclusion of the campaign.
Carlton already has one Category B rookie on its list in Irish youngster Cillian McDaid.
