SYDNEY has added some more defensive depth to its list after securing Jackson Thurlow from Geelong on the last day of the NAB AFL Trade Period.

The Cats have received the Swans' round four selection, which currently sits at pick 70.

Taken with pick 16 at the 2012 NAB AFL Draft, Thurlow played 46 games in six seasons with Geelong, which included seven appearances last season.

"We're pleased to be able to secure the trade with Geelong to bring Jackson to Sydney," Swans head of football Tom Harley said.

"At 24 years old we think Jackson has a lot of good football ahead of him and will be a great addition to our defensive group.

"A former first-round draft pick, Jackson’s a great kick, he’s quick and damaging off a half-back-flank and on the wing and he’s a great character and we look forward to welcoming him and partner Laura to Sydney."

The 24-year-old's best year in the competition came when he played 19 of 22 games for the Cats in 2015, but a torn ACL suffered in the pre-season saw Thurlow miss the entire 2016 campaign.

Thurlow has spent time across half-back and through the midfield with Geelong and gives the Swans another option in the back half with young star Callum Mills expected to move up the ground next year.

He joins former North Melbourne backman Ryan Clarke at Sydney, who joined the club earlier in the Trade Period, after veterans Dan Hannebery (St Kilda) and Gary Rohan (Geelong) found new homes.

The Swans have been relatively quiet on the trade front in 2019 after they missed out on securing Collingwood's Tom Langdon, with the club also linked to Gold Coast captain Steven May (who has since been traded to Melbourne) in the lead-up to the period.
