PORT Adelaide star Robbie Gray was among a group of current recruiters and AFL club officials to take part in a certificate in list management last week.
The course, which is run by AFL SportsReady and the AFL Coaches Association, saw participants meet at Victoria Park for a day-long seminar before a workshop. It is built for aspiring recruiters and coaches to gain a stronger understanding into the wheeling and dealing of AFL list managers.
CLUB LISTS COMPARED Oldest? Youngest? Most experienced?
They will then complete two weeks of online activities before receiving a final assessment on their learnings in the course on the skills and methods of club list management.
Specifically, the program is designed to give an insight into the structure of list management groups and the difference in roles between recruiting junior talent and attracting players from rival clubs.
There was also an overview on the collective bargaining agreement for players and compliance policies, plus a closer look at the total player payments and salary cap.
The course also saw attendees taken through the player contract and negotiation process with agents, how to navigate the Trade Period and the ability to deal in future draft selections.
WHO'S LEAVING YOUR CLUB? All the latest retirements and delistings
They also looked at the way sport is developing in the United States, and the more fluid nature of player movement in sports overseas.
In a sign of Gray's possible post-career interests, the 30-year-old forward, who kicked 36 goals last year for the Power, was among the group to hear from Carlton head of football Brad Lloyd during the workshop.
Lloyd was appointed to the role at the Blues in August after a decade leading Fremantle's list management and recruiting team.
He offered experiences from his time in the role during his presentation, which was a key element of the workshop in Melbourne.
Gray will play his 200th AFL game in round one next year when Port Adelaide takes on Melbourne at the MCG.
