HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson slammed his own brand of football last week, but Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron must have loved it.

Sunday night’s clash at Giants Stadium was a tactical arm wrestle early as GWS smashed the Hawks at their own kick-mark game, taking 62 more marks to set the foundations for a 34-point victory.

After losing both 2019 games to the Hawks by a combined margin of 89 points, Cameron put on a masterclass against his former mentor.

The Giants switched back to an electric brand in the third term and piled on five quick goals to march to the 13.5 (83) to 7.7 (49) win.

Josh Kelly (30 disposals) Harry Perryman (28 disposals) and Nick Haynes (21 disposals) were crucial in controlling the flow of the game.

Jack Gunston (three goals) was the focal point up forward for Hawthorn and helped give his side a sniff with two third-quarter goals.

The Giants now move into the top eight, snaring their second win on the trot.

McEvoy meets his match
Hawthorn defender Ben McEvoy gathered coaches votes with an excellent performance against Ben Brown last week and has really started to find his feet in defence, but the Giants zoned in on his weaknesses and isolated Harry Himmelberg as the deepest forward. Himmelberg's evasion and speed at ground level made McEvoy look sluggish, before Jeremy Finlayson came in and beat McEvoy in the air. Jeremy Cameron played further up field and had two majors and two goal assists of his own.

Big boy gets his revenge
Hawthorn forward Mitch Lewis left the game in the third term with an apparent hamstring injury and the Hawks were left with a hole up forward. After getting plenty kicked on him in defence, McEvoy swung forward and kicked two goals late in the quarter. Momentum swung back Hawthorn's way with three unanswered goals heading into the final term.

A tale of two halves
GWS coach Cameron was happy for his side to have dominated the uncontested marks stat in the first half, but bemoaned his team's inability to gain field position with that game plan. The Giants flipped the switch in an electric third term, reverting back to the exciting brand of football that tears teams apart. Within the space of 10 minutes the Giants piled on five goals and put the game out of reach.
