AFLW qualifying final preview: Lions v Magpies

Gemma Bastiani looks at what to expect when the Lions and Pies clash in a qualifying final

IN A repeat of last year's preliminary final, Brisbane and Collingwood will battle it out at the Gabba for a chance to advance through the finals series.

The Lions have had an unexpected bye week as the Pies battled a fresh bout of unavailable players due to health and safety protocols; a less than ideal preparation for the sixth-placed side.

    22:03

    Last time they met

Arguably one of the windiest games we've seen in the AFLW, Brisbane got the win in round five in Maroochydore thanks to its strength at ground level and relentless running game. The Lions won the inside 50 count 37-20, controlling the territory for long periods of time, and adapted to the conditions faster.

    Gameplans

Collingwood has won - or really challenged - in recent games because of its willingness to spread and find space. It will be important for the Lions to be conscious not just of defending grass but being accountable to a direct opponent. Another key for Brisbane will be limiting the attack that Ruby Schleicher is able to create. Schleicher has been in particularly good form over the last three games, winning more of the ball and launching scoring chains, so assigning someone to simply sit on her for four quarters may be on the cards.

    Head to head

These sides have played one another seven times, with the Lions ahead on the ledger 4-3. In 2021 they played off twice, and Brisbane enjoyed victory both times, but for a combined margin of seven points.

In those games, which included a preliminary final, Brianna Davey and Britt Bonnici led the Pies for disposals.

FINALS FIXTURE Who faces off in the qualifying finals?

Neither player will line up for them on Saturday, however, so Collingwood will need to really focus on an even spread of contributors through the middle and especially when transitioning forward.

    02:33

    Players to watch

    Tahlia Hickie

In the ruck Hickie has been averaging 20.5 hitouts per game, but importantly also finding the ball around the ground, winning 3.3 intercepts and 9.1 disposals each week. She expertly gives her midfielders first use of the ball more often than not, which goes a long way toward the Lions' territory control in game.

    Mikala Cann

Cann has taken her increasing midfield responsibility on with aplomb. Averaging a career-high 15.2 disposals a game this year, Cann's strength and class has been just what Collingwood has needed.

    Dream match-ups

    Cathy Svarc v Jaimee Lambert

Lambert remains Collingwood's last elite ball-winning midfielder due to unfortunate ACL injuries keeping Davey and Bonnici out. If Svarc can slow Lambert's impact, Brisbane will be in the box seat to advance.

    Orla O'Dwyer v Steph Chiocci

Too often this year, teams have allowed O'Dwyer to sit off the contest, get on the end of a quick handball and take off into attack. As one of the most experienced wingers in the competition, it will be important for Chiocci to remain aware of O'Dwyer's positioning and prevent her from playing the game on her terms.

    Season so far

    Brisbane

Brisbane is the only finals side that has had to miss a game due to health and safety protocols and contend with the condensed fixture. Despite interruptions, the Lions managed to break their club record for highest score twice, and briefly claimed the mantle of highest score in AFLW history. Importantly, they average 5.1 individual goalkickers a game - the most in the competition - which makes them a defensive unit's nightmare.

    Collingwood

Collingwood has stuttered throughout the season, taking time to work through the loss of Brianna Davey, particularly in attack. They really struggled to get the ball forward for a number of weeks, but once they rediscovered a hard running game in round eight against the Western Bulldogs, their spread and ability to find space on the open side of the ground wreaked havoc on opposition defences.

Next stop, MCG: Lions thump Pies to book prelim date

Brisbane has booked a spot in the preliminary finals, defeating Collingwood by 50 points

BRISBANE is off to the MCG to play Melbourne in next Saturday's preliminary final after dismantling Collingwood by 50 points at the Gabba.

The reigning premiers flexed their muscles in a niggly qualifying final, dominating from the outset to win 10.10 (70) to 3.2 (20) in humid conditions.

It was a comprehensive performance, led by winger Orla O'Dwyer, who put on a show for her mum and sister after they arrived from Ireland three days earlier to see their first AFLW game live.

LIONS v MAGPIES Full match coverage and stats

    O'Dwyer was everywhere, finishing with 19 disposals, a long-range goal and a match-high 392m gained.

    05:08

Brisbane led by nine points at quarter-time and extended at every break, rubbing salt in with a four-goal final term as Collingwood appeared to run out of legs following its COVID-impacted lead-in.

Brisbane led by nine points at quarter-time and extended at every break, rubbing salt in with a four-goal final term.

    00:38

The key indicators were a landslide in the home team's favour, winning contested ball by 40, clearances by 14 and the inside 50 count 44-21.

After some first-quarter jitters in front of goal, Brisbane turned the match with three goals in the second.

Courtney Hodder kicked one from a free kick, Greta Bodey from a nice set shot, and O'Dwyer with a 55m bomb that had the small, but partisan, Gabba crowd on its feet.

Collingwood would be disappointed with its lack of discipline on occasions, conceding goals to Jesse Wardlaw and Ally Anderson after 50m penalties.

Brisbane was just too good and will now face the Demons, a team that beat them by three points earlier in the season.

    00:24

    Orla's Irish Magic
With her mum and sister out from Ireland and watching their first live game of AFLW, Orla O'Dwyer produced a piece of magic they will long remember. Late in the second quarter and with Brisbane building its lead, O'Dwyer gathered a loose ball 55m from goal, swung on to her trusty left boot and hoisted it towards goal. The ball landed 15m out with a little luck of the Irish, bounced through for an incredible goal.

    00:39

    Oh no, Sarah Rowe
Late in the third quarter, Sarah Rowe had a moment she would rather forget – but one Lion Ruby Svarc will remember forever. Svarc snapped the ball from 35m and as it sailed towards goal Rowe ran back with the flight, seemingly having it covered. However, whether it was through a lack of judgement or lack of urgency, Rowe let the ball bounce through. It was Svarc's first goal in her ninth career game.

    Another victim for Svarc
With Collingwood's midfield decimated by long-term injuries to Brit Bonnici and Bri Davey, there was little doubt Brisbane stopper Cathy Svarc would focus her attention on Jaimee Lambert. And like she has so often in the past, Svarc got the job done, keeping the dangerous Lambert to just 12 disposals and one clearance, paving the way for Bates, Anderson and Dawes to flourish. Svarc also got involved in attack, gathering 13 possessions to go with her seven tackles.

    Say what?

"They're very excited about the chance to play at the MCG. Who wouldn't be? We've got a high-quality opposition who just snuck past us last time we played them, so there's lots of incentive to get out there and put on a good show." – Brisbane coach Craig Starcevich

"You could see the impacts of that (missing a week with COVID) on the ground today, we just didn't have anything in the legs. As much as we wanted to try, at the back end of the game we were running on the spot. In the end they got numbers to the ball better than us and we didn't have the legs to go with them." – Collingwood coach Steve Symonds
