MELBOURNE AFL Women's rookie Shae Sloane has been ruled out for the year after tearing the ACL in her right knee on Sunday.

The defender was playing her first game when her knee gave way in a marking contest with Fremantle's Ebony Antonio. The Demons lost by four points at Casey Fields.

"Shae has been a terrific addition to our club this year, and although this injury is extremely disappointing, Shae will continue to play an important support role for the rest of the girls throughout the remainder of the season," Melbourne AFLW football operations manager Daniel McPherson told the club website.

"Given she has just crossed over to AFLW (Sloane is the former captain of the Australian volleyball team), Shae will now have the opportunity to work closely with our coaching staff and develop her knowledge of the game, to help ensure she comes back an even better player."

Greater Western Sydney forward Aimee Schmidt has a confirmed dislocated left elbow, after suffering the injury in the early stages of the team's two-point loss to Brisbane.

Schmidt was attempting to tackle Lion Sam Virgo when she landed awkwardly and broke her fall with her left arm, her body weight going through her elbow.

The 25-year-old is awaiting the results of scans done in Brisbane.

Collingwood forward Kristy Stratton broke her left hand against Geelong and had surgery on Monday.

The club is hoping she will still feature in the AFLW season but will have a clearer picture about her recovery later in the week.

Phoebe McWilliams was a late withdrawal from Geelong's team that beat Collingwood by one point on Saturday night with a hamstring complaint.

The key forward pulled up sore after training on Thursday night, and at this stage is still no certainty to make her debut in the hoops against the Western Bulldogs this weekend.

Teammate and club captain Melissa Hickey will have to pass a fitness test to make her return from a right knee reconstruction, having failed to tick all the boxes last week.

Collingwood forward Sophie Alexander was full of promise in her first AFLW match, kicking the first goal against Geelong and missing two other shots, but her night ended early when a stray arm from teammate Sharni Layton collected her.

Alexander was stretchered from the field and diagnosed with concussion. She will need to pass a test to be picked for Saturday's clash with Melbourne at Victoria Park.
