PORT Adelaide is closing on the signing of Fremantle gun Gemma Houghton.

Womens.afl understands the Power are hopeful of quickly tying down a deal for the dual All-Australian forward, with the new expansion side looking to add her arrival to that of marquee signing Erin Phillips ahead of the club's maiden AFLW season.

Crosstown nemesis West Coast was also understood to have had an interest in Houghton over recent weeks, though rival clubs believe Port Adelaide is now firmly in the box seat to secure her signature.

Houghton has kicked 40 goals from her 46 games for Fremantle, establishing herself as one of the competition's most dangerous attacking options across All-Australian campaigns in both 2019 and 2020.

The signing of Houghton would be one of Port Adelaide's first from outside South Australia, with the expansion outfit having already announced the arrival of both Phillips and fellow dual Crows premiership player Ange Foley in recent weeks.

The Power also had an interest in the AFLW Grand Final's best on ground and reigning Adelaide best and fairest Anne Hatchard, though as revealed by womens.afl, she has since recommitted to the Crows.
